I just had the same problem with the same model machine. My first thought was a dying H/drive if you hit f10 on start up you will enter the set up, select diagnostics, and run the H/drive test; mine came back o.k.

Although I do believe this model does suffer with h/drive problems. I then borrowed a vista disc and re installed, I used the original key on the base of the laptop to activate, and it worked fine. The only thing is you must use the same vista installation that was originally on the machine (32-bit or 64-bit) to stay legal. Then all that’s left is go into device manager and download any missing drivers.
